Back at ya Simple.
The true meaning of friendship. A little history first. This is my favorite Holiday, and after my divorce when dinner was over, I was always alone. My oldest son Ernie was in the service and my daughter Carmie was married, my youngest son was 12 and went with his mother. About two years later, I said to Joey, hey man my friends Dave and Phyllis, (who Joey already knew well) invited me up their house after dinner. Why don't you go with me?? I won't get into the first one today, but for 20 years they have been some of the greatest days of my life. Here goes the history..
Growing up Dave had a German Shepherd named Blaze. Blaze actually hung with us, when we were young. Years later I got a German Shepherd named Sabrina, one of the best friends I ever had. Every Time Dave and Phyllis came to the house he spent a lot of time messing with Sabrina. SOOOOO, this one Thanksgiving about 12-15 years ago I get an idea that me and Joey are going to get him a German Shepherd, I was scared to death of Phyllis, so I had to tell them..They agreed and me and Joey brought BRO Morris into Dave and Phyllis's life on a very memorable Thanksgiving Day. I actually came up with the name BRO because Dave served in the Big Red One in Viet Nam, not because BRO was mostly black as some veterinarian called Dave out on that very subject LOL!! A few years back we had to put BRO down he had canine cancer. One of the few times in my life I saw a couple of my heroes cry..I cried along with them..
This is what I received in the mail.
Sit down and listen..
August 31, 2007 the day BRO left us.
Dear Ernie,
In the past I have written you letters that shall we say were bulletin board material. This one is not, this is a heart, man to man, friend to friend letter.
Eight years ago you brought into my life a dog named BRO who soon became BRO Morris, at that time I wrote you a letter of thanks and told you that every time I looked at him I would think of our friendship and for the most part I did, sometimes what I thought was negative, sometimes I would think to myself that bastard gave me this dog to torture me. On the other hand this dog became a creature that I loved with all my heart. He made sure I got up every morning so we would go on our daily walk, he became my motivation. He was by my side all through the day and became my companion. When I would leave to go to work at the dugout he would stand in front of me until I gave him a few treats so I became his waiter. Sometimes I think he trained me more than I trained him.
The nights belonged to Phyllis when she was around no one else mattered, but I got over that and didn't mind playing second fiddle to her because for all the kidding I do, I know that she is a wonderful person. Dogs have a very keen sense and I guess he sensed that she Phyllis was a lot better person to be around than my miserable ass. Never doubt a dogs senses.
So life will be a little lonelier without him and he will forever be in my heart. I would like to share with you the words of a fictional animal, Winnie The Pooh, I feel the Pooh Bear was saying this for all well kept loving animals. Here goes,"If ever there is a tomorrow when we are not together. There is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think, but the most important thing is even when we are apart. I will always be with you.
If BRO could talk I think that is what he would have said, but we know that one of the things that BRO couldn't do is talk so I am writing this for him as well as myself.
Thank you from the both of us for bringing us together, we had eight great years together and without you none of this would never have happened, so we owe everything to you for without your kindness there never would have been BRO Morris and Dave Morris together. We will be eternally grateful to you.
Thank You, Your Friends,
Dave and Your God Dog Bro.
I kept that letter and always will. Between myself and my friends people often wonder how we could stay together for almost sixty years. I told Butchie that our humor is the glue..So here goes. BRO Morris at the time I got him was the only male German Shepherd in New Jersey..I paid the guy 600.00and brought him home a few days before Thanksgiving so everyone in my family could get fleas, yep BRO gave us fleas..anyhow, Dave sends in the forms or whatever and gets all the info back on BRO. So about a month later I get a call. Hey Ern, where did you get BRO?? At a kennel in New Jersey..You wouldn't lie to a life long friend would you? Fuck no, what are you talking about?? How much did you pay for BRO?? Nothing, man nothing..You wouldn't lie?? No way.. Well the American Kennel Club just sent me all his papers and it states that he costs 600.00.. Dave I would never lie to a friend. It is a well known fact that The American Kennel Club are a bunch of fucking liars. After he got done laughing, I think he let that lie go...LOL!!!Love you my friend...
Very well said Simple, The both of you have more love in your heart than most I Know. God Bless you both
DITTO..........Being a two dog owner and lover I understand the importance of the unconditional love you get from them.
