He said why the fuck would I want to go back and see a place I hated that much.. That was good enough for me. I ain't going back either.

LOL Like Plain I myself along with some seasoned horse back riders, Floyd might have been there, went to Rockhill to rent some horses. I never rode either and Ralph Riviesso from Gerhard St. worked there and told me this horse was calm. The fuckers name was Turtle...Off we go got down to the bridle path and he was having a bad day. Everyone else took off and Turtle wasn't having any of that. Kick him they said. I kicked and kicked and off I went as I watched his head and eyes looking at me. He took off and went back to the stable, as I was told they always go home. A beautiful Damsel grabbed me as a storm was coming and put me on the horn of her saddle, ouch ouch ouch all the way back to Shawmont stables. Got off, waiting for a kiss but no, she had to put her horse away. Thank you , and off to the Ridge to thumb it home.

Happy 96th Birthday to the greatest Mom. Hope you're rockin' the heavens today Mom! Mom loved gray horses; if she was at the racetrack or just watching a horse race on TV she always picked the gray. So carry on in her memory all you grays! Today is also Uncle Tartzie's birthday (Simple's Godfather), I think he would be 100today. For the old yunkers who sign in on this blog Tartzie had a paper stand at the corner of Main & Levring for many years; sold more than papers.
My favorite race horse of all times was Ruffian, the beautiful horse that had to be put down. What a sad story that was. Also Spectacular Bid, Secretariat, there are just too many to name so I'll stick with those three. In the entertainment field there was none greater than Trigger. When I was five years old I actually got to pet Trigger. I think I'm repeating, repeating, repeating, myself on this story so I'll just stop here. Congrats to all of you who made it through Parris Island; we know it wasn't easy.

Turtle was The horse I ask for every time I went riding. Ralph lied to you Jim , that horse could run and once he put his head down on the way back to the stables that sucker ran his ass off. I got yelled at everytime.I took that sucker 45 minutes to walk up to Northwestern Ave and 15 minutes to run back.

Ralph is now a trainer at Philly park, but I don't think he trains to many Turtles..
Me and Bobby Hanson (who graduated Parris Island with me) also went to Rock Hill. I think he got Bluebell and I got Apache..We headed on down the trail, and when me and Apache poked out onto the bridle path, there was no sign of Bobbo..I waited a little while and then headed back toward the stables. About halfway back there is Hanson standing in the grassy area with the reins in his hands and the fuckin horse is eatin. I say yo man, gotta get on him and pick his head up this costs about a dollar an hour. With this he puts his foot in the stirrup and the horse spins around, throwing him to the ground he jumps up and starts running up this little hill, and damn if Turtle didn't catch him and sink those big yellow teeth right in his ass. You wanna talk about laughin. He was screaming and my horse starts running all over the place and Turtle he runs back to the barn. Hanson he runs the other way cluthing at his chewed up ass, and all this only cost 2.00 as Apache tore off with me and went right back to the stable.. I sat there for about an hour when here comes Hanson, still holding his ass and bitchin that he wants his money back. The guys at the stable were laughin so fuckin hard they told him the next time he came in he could ride for free as Turtle just ate enough ass to last him a month..

See there are many horse stories in the Yunk. How about a town where the kids could go horsback riding, and still be in Philadephia. Only in the Yunk.

Went horseback riding twice in my life and vowed never to do it again. Once was back at the ever famous stable back the "crick". Horse was great but I was scared to death. Next time was on my honeymoon where I witnessed a runaway with one of the men in our party, who arrived back at the stable 10 minutes after we started out. The ride lasted for an hour and he had to sit at the stable for 40 minutes until the rest of us got back. I had a very nice gentle horse but once again was very scared. Just felt uneasy being that high off the ground and having no control if the horse decided to do whatever. Your stories are much more interesting. I find it very funny that there was a horse named Turtle, who appears to have been a terror, after Simple's tale yesterday about the tortoise and the hare. I guess he read the story and was running from that dreaded "wabbit".

That rabbit tale brought to mind McHugh. Maybe he really did shot himself in the ass. Pat if you are still with us hope you are OK. I didn't see the movie Secretariat..but I heard from many people that it was great. Having said that, I don't see how anything could top Sea Bisquit. Just think about the karma involved in that story. The horse who nobody really wanted running on cheap tracks and sometimes running two or three races a week. The jockey with no family, riding at racetracks in Mexico and California for food. Boxing to make money at night, losing an eye. The trainer a cowboy, who if there are such things as horse whisperers, was def. one of them. Then the owner a bicycle repaiman, who knew nothing about the sport of horse racing..These four elements came together at a time when the country and it's people were suffering through The Great Depression. Was it any wonder that the common man, took to loving this horse as it climbed its way out of the claiming ranks and into a world class champion. In the process actually beating one of the greatest race horses of all time, War Admiral. Think back to that day and what it must have felt like to any underdog and there were a lot of them at this time, that if this horse could do that, maybe I have a chance. It is a wonderful story,, and the book by Laura Hildebrand is one excellant read. (thanks Dave) One of thee best stories and one of the highlights in the long history of horse racing. SEA BISQUIT

The movie Secretariat was very good but Sea Bisquit was spectaculer!

Well The Breeders Cup starts tomorrow. I kinda liked it when it was a one day event, but just like any other money making endeavor, it exploded into two days of million dollar races. Hey, why not? People get an oppurtunity to go bet em up for two days. Horses for courses watch the horses that like Churchill..tonite I gotta get together with the critters. They want to pick horses and bet them. You kiddin me, Blat and Slat bet on Turtles in their country, and you all heard that story..I will sit with them awhile. Can't wait to hear these picks..Squirrels Tree. Polly Want A Cracker. NAH NAH YAH, Comemere, BlatAttack, and Slats and Beds. Enough..
