Mornin..Ah!! the sun shines in late August. Phils win a good tight ballgame last nite, to Phillies fans more important was the way Hamels pitched. Kid is really a good pitcher..They talk a lot about Halliday an Lee as well they should, but man Hamels is right there with them..Should be a fun stretch drive. 33 games in 31 days, the media wants too say that is a daunting task, come on, oh great scribes of the North. Going down in that mine shaft 1 day is a daunting task, but sports in general (WHERE THE FUCK IS THE GENERAL.)!! OW COFFEE ON THE BALLS, SON OF A BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm back..Sports in general, and kept in a proper perspective is actually a wonderful thing for our society.. I for one loved playing sports growing up, as I got older, played ball with my friends against each other, then against different neighborhoods, we always had good teams as the guys I grew up with were all pretty good athletes. I can give you one fast pitch softball team we fielded, position by position and this is after the service. It was an American Legion Fast Pitch Softball League, in Germantown.. Ready for this roster..........Drum Roll Easy...........................Pitching: Dave Morris, Catching, none other than General Joe Tin, First Base, Robert (how many of you knew that) Butch Witkowski, Second Base, Thomas "Floyd" Flaherty, Short Stop: Joe "Lower Lip Louie" Renshaw (R.I. P. my friend.) Third Base, Pat Renshaw. Center Field, You got it.. Ernie "Simpleton" Keebler. Left Field, James "Jimbo" Cairnes (R.I.P. my friend)," Right Field, Jim "Monk" Moran." (he is still with us Jimmy Mc, thank You God). Now if you will read that roster again, you may say, "wait where is Terrance "Plain" Morris.. HE IS EVERYWHERE!!!!! Relief Pitcher, first base, second base, shortstop, third base, outfield, catcher and all around fucking ball breaker of the other team..Yeah that's right Plain played every position, and did a damn good job may I add.. I think we were 7-7 or something like that. If my memory serves me correctly, they were pretty high scoring affairs and a lot of fun..I also remember meeting Babe and Butch at the Rec probably around 1958, and me and Floyd started playing basketball with them, along with Pat and Joe and Dave and Terry, pretty formidable bunch too beat at anything.. I know we always held our own against anybody in any sport.. One last thing, I remember Tommy and myself riding up to Andorra when the bowling lanes, we were in a league on Saturday Mornings. I think we only did it for one year..
This post on sports has an ulterior motive today. I know that you know that Michael Vick signed a 100 million dollar contract. I also want you to know that is doesn't matter, that is what they do.., and the place will be packed, and rightfully so. You know why, because of my opening statements people relate to sports, when they grew up, when their children grew up, and it is a good thing.. I know he gets a 100 million (I really don't think he will ever see that much money), but the trickle down effect of the Keynesian Economic Theory goes into effect..It means that the people that print the tickets, the people that sell them, the people that check them, the people that make the uniforms, the people that sell them, the people that line the field, the people that work the concessions, the people that own the concessions, the people that drive the buses and trains, the people that sell the beer and ice, the people that, well you get my drift... They all make their livings off of our sports teams, and remember that only a few elite players in each league get this kind of money, do I think it is ridiculous? Of course, but that is how our economic system works... I also think it is ridiculous that the President of Caesars got a 96 million dollar bonus last year, while they continued to cut jobs and take benefits away from the remaining employees.. We don't hear a lot about that, but it exist in the corporate world a hell of a lot more than it does the sports world.. I think they would do us all a favor, by giving out the contracts in private. We really don't need too know what they make. There is nothing we can or will do about it.. I for one don't go to games, but I was at everyone when I was younger.., the younger people enjoy their day of football or baseball, as we all do, so go enjoy forget about the salaries, and remember the hot dog guy makes his living off these games.. Yes Plain, they are a bunch of spoiled and sometimes arrogant lot, but sports is sports and you and I will both be watching come opening day of football..Add anything you guys want, and as you see our opinions about Vick or anyone else, matter not...........................

Nice memories about sports and the residents of the Yunk. "Memories light the corners of the my mind, misty water color memories of the way we were". How 'bout the Green Valley Chargers, what joy they brought to us on Sunday afternoons in the Fall. RIP Coaches & some players of that special team. To those of you that are still here, "thanks for the memories".
Eagles, Mike Prick, I don't care how your season goes, I will be rooting for whoever is playing you. Pig Reid I hope you and your jailbird get your asses kicked big time. Enough said. GO PHILLIES!! You make our summers brighter. OK off the sports venue. J. McC, I think you got me because I cannot remember anyone delivering groceries in a basket. Your clue was a little vague. You said between Levrington and Dupont on the right going north. Lev. and Dup. run north & south and Ridge Ave. runs east & west. So, I'm a little confused but anywho I don't remember groceries being delivered in a basket. If you can remember the name then I will probably remember but I guess you can't call me the Sage of Rox. & the Yunk anymore. Just have to add this - my word is "mantle" so going back on some of our daily games - two meanings - The "Mick" and the shelf on a fireplace. My friends please enjoy this beautiful summer day!!!!
I think Finn McCool was thinking of the Easter Bunny. He is the only guy I know that delivered food in a basket, oops, the pretzel man he had a basket.., he had those little soft pretzels and a jar of mustard with a stick in it, he also had a dirty towel spread over the pretzels. He also said more rosaries than a Charismatic Catholic..he roamed the streets of our youth that is for sure. Loved those little pretzels and especially the basket he used to deliver them..
Strebor, I hate too say this but I was trying to figure out what J Mc was talking about with Dupont and Leverington running the same way, you must realize you are dealing with someone that doesn't know nor care what fucking day it is..tell him it was Edlings..Question of the day..What was the little store on Levering and Silverwood called? It was run by two sisters that looked like crones. They delivered heads in a basket much like BraveHeart..My King a message from the North..they hand him a basket, his nephews head rolls out, the gay prince jumps back in fear, saying Wallace has sacked York. The King (Edward Long Shanks.) says, if Wallace could sack York, he can invade Southern England. The gay boy friend of the Prince pipes up. We shall stop him Sire..Who is this that offers his opinion without being asked. The gay prince pipes up again, this is Antonio, I have appointed him my high lord of war council.. Is he qualified?? The boyfriend answers.. I am trained in the art of warfare sire. You are, are you (as he puts his hand around his shoulder) and what would you suggest I do, (as he throws him out the fuckin window.) It was hilarious, that son-of-a-bitch screamed until you heard the thud. Naturally Sally the Prince grabbed his knife, not for long old Long Shanks kicked him in his nuts and stomped him like a roach. What a sense of humor that King had..I know he made me laugh..
Millsies was the store at Levering & Silverwood.
Haaaaaaa I say Simple Simple, Strebor is the only one with a good memory , the green Valley Chargers went undefeated for 5 years as a Matter of fat we weren't scored on for 5 years, as a matter of Fact when the Lil Quackers clamied they havent been beaten in 17 years !!!!!!!!!!!!! fALSE We Played them at Deigo Louies and were beating them 35 to 0 at the Half and they called it off. And as I rember we won every league we played in weather it be football , Basketball , or softball for like 15 years I know I was 38 when I retired the Younger guys who we used to beat 20 to 0 in soft ball went to 10 to nothing to 7 to 5 to 5 to 4 then they beat us think it was Petes bar, and I only Played every positon because you friggin guys all were gretty and didn't wanny come out. lollllllllllll So I became a coach even tho I had a better Arm and could hit better than all of ya and still can smirks.Seriously I love coaching and was lucky enough to have great coaches around me, because your only as good as the people around you. I have been In 4 World Series, won 15 State Championships, and 4 Middle Alantic Championships, meaning we had to beat every teak In Penna ,New Jersey. Del, Mary, and New York to get to the world Series so I have been very Lucky to be blessed with the coaches and Players I have had over the years.
I rember when the guy that was In charge of The Rec came over to Burgerville and ask us to Play Flag football because he was going to forfit, and they were 5 and 0 we weren't ready to Play because we were dressed in are regular close shoes and Jeans but we had nothing to do, so we said sure why Not! Well the team we were playing was Th Wiss. Halks the semi Pro team they laughed at us when we came out onto the field. At games end when we won 28 to nothing they didn't laugh anymore!!!!!!!As a matter of fact we didn't lose another game and won the Championship against ther same team.ahhhhhh the Memories
That is right, Oh Great Sage Of The Yunk.
Not all of it was right, It was kendrick the name of the football team and they weren' 5 an 0 they were 0 and 5. we Didn't play the next year because we were all away!
WTF. I go up the Ridge or down the Ridge, I don't go over the Ridge. North /South East/ West. Who cares. I can't get lost on the Ridge just don't know what day I am doing it. This store will be found. It was before Weiss's going up the Ridge or over the Ridge and after that little bar that was on Dupont. You would give them a list and they would go get it and put it in a Bin/Basket what ever the fuck it was and give it to you to check out. I am on it and if I must I will recruit Plain, only as a last resort. I'll come up with it someday.
MMMMMMMMMMM let's see the Baltimore?
The Baltimore was right above Green Lane; on the corner was the bank (I think at the time it was The First Pa. Bank), then there was the Bunny Shop (Ladies Wear) and then The Baltimore Market. (It is now a dollar store). And, Greenie resided in the next store, which was the Green Parrot, and then there was Weiss's, which used to be on the other side of the street. I do not remember them delivering in baskets, but do remember my Mom shopping there. It was like one of the first Super Markets on the Ridge in Rox. So "The Sage" whomever you are (as I was the first The Sage) you may be right. The basket thing is throwing me off. J. McC didn't mean to confuse you as we all just go up and down the Ridge not East or West. Please, please Dear Boy forgive me!
Smiles as we never went East or west on the Ridge, we always went North and South.East And West was Of Germantown Ave.
Keep smiling oh great sage as Ridge Ave becomes Ridge Pike or 422and it runs E & W. Smiles, nods and leaves P & S for now.
Yes 422 does run E & W But In Philly Ridge Ave Runs N & S so Does Broad Street Yet they Go In different Directions.
WTF!!!!!!!!!
The Simple one is here too rule over this mess, with his Solomon like logic.. Yeah, guys I did not forget, nor ever will forget the Green Valley Chargers. They were not only a great football team, but forged together generations of Yunkers and actually a new neighborhood in the Roxborough Area..I actually grew too love Sundays during those years..Lot of the coaches and sad too say a lot of those players have left us way too soon.. Give a roll call some day, it will probably surprise you how many have passed..
On a brighter note, keep coachin Plain, you do a great job..
Jimmy Mc line up for the nut ward with me and Plain. Where was this phantom basket delivery restaurant, on Dupont up from the bar.. There was that barber shop. I believe Weasel still cuts hair in there.., but a restaurant.. I think Sparnes was on Mitchell, where the Adobe sits right now.. Oh Wait a minute, Wait a minute. If you go South on the Ridge to Dupont and make a left to go East, you can wind up on Manayunk Ave. which goes one way North to Alaska, and then you could make that jug handle at the seven eleven South too Baltimore and turn right and go up Lyceum to Pechin make a right go to Shurs stop at ECK'S at get fucked up, because that is what you all do to me...

Yeah, and wait one more minute... Where the fuck did all these so called sages appear from, I ask on question about one store, and BAM, I got sages all over the Ville......Later..
Oh great citizens of the Ville. Weasel would give you a Razor cut going UP THE RIDGE, on the left just past Levering in that row of stores. I think there is a Nail, Finger and Toe place there. Maybe you could take the menagerie up there for a tune-up.
Now, Chest pumped out, Hair standing up, doing the Plain Strutt, Carol saying SIT DOWN,Dancing with the Stars is coming, the name of the mystery market was SHIRLEY'S Food Market, awning out front. You walked in and they would take a list, put your stuff in some fucking thing and bring it to you for pay up time. Yes sir UP THE RIDGE on the right, right about where the State Store used to be. It sure is good to know some one who was around when Men Were Men and Ships were made of Wood. OK, going to watch Lady GAGA tape and practice my steps like Plain..............
Walks out on the Stage.......starts doing an ole soft shoe.....then a moon walk......jumps into my Egyptian Dance......sings The Sun will come out Tomorrowwwwwwwwwwwww......so Glad you wanted some one on the Stage Simple.......smirks and walks away
Lady Gaga looks Better as a Guy, Justin Beaver is Prettier than most Girls and we have a White Heavey Weight Champ, tell me this world isn't going to Hell in a Hand Basket from Shirleys, smirks......and who the hell are all these Sages, and where's Cateyyyyyyyyyyyy????????
This is the last that I will talk about the groceries in a basket. I certainly do remember Shirley's but no baskets, but please do not un-pump your chest or comb down your hair or listen to Carol to sit down, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut Shirley's was located on Ridge Ave. above Leverington, actually at the top of Ripka St., there is now an empty Chrysler dealer there now. THE END. GOOD NIGHT P & S!
One strange day at the Ville, when the Simpleton seems like the only sane one..Ask one little question and let me show you what happens..
Sports as Kids, and young men.
Vicks salary.
Keynesian Economics.
Hometown Football Teams.
Team Rosters from a seventies or late sixties softball team.
Plain coaching.
Strebor directing traffic.
Scenes from Braveheart.
Sages to the left of me sages too the right. stuck in the middle with Plain..
Jimmy Mc not knowing what day or direction he is going in..of course he got Shirley's which I heard of, but really don't recall.
Jimmy Mc taking a cue from Plain and dancing..
Plain dancing.
Simple solving everything as always (ahem).
Simple calling himself Solomon pretty, presumptuous on my part.
All this because I put out a little sports story. (like a 100 million of them.)
Only in the Ville kids only in the Ville.
What a stimulating day and night. I will leave well enough alone. I;ll wait until you do groceries stores again and then tell you exactly where Shirley's was. A couple of weeks in the nut ward would be a nice change.......It isn't bad once you get to know everyone............LOL
Nut ward don't get it. Another day at the Ville, just when I think we may be getting a little stale or a little repetitive, you citizens come up with a day like today.. Can't wait till tomorrow. The Doctor is in the house and the Phils are doing their thing, which is playing damn good baseball. Gotta love the Phightins...
Dark out here, in the Ville tonight. I tried to ask Greeny if he or she remembered where Shirley's was and he said..ARK Shirley's was near the toe place by Ripka on Main, Shirley's was by the toe place by Ripka on Main ARK!! This is why I hate that fuckin parrot..Slavs are racked out with the goat between them I can see their 7 toes sticking out of the tent. Greeny and Sammy are still whistling and ARKING!! always some kinda noise going on.. Here comes Mere, fucking eyes bulging and Hatoona Matadooing everybody he passes..Hatoona Matada Mere. Hatoona Matada Simple.. Mere do me a favor. Sure Simple.. Number one pleas get down off of your toes.. Thank you.. Number two please turn your fuckin neck around in a normal position. Thank you.
